🌅 First Reading
1 John 2:3–11
Beloved, the way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep His commandments.
Whoever says, “I know Him,” but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoever keeps His word, the love of God is truly perfected in him.Whoever claims to abide in Him ought to walk just as He walked.
I am writing you not a new commandment, but an old one that you had from the beginning:
the message you heard. And yet, it is new, because its truth is seen in Him and in you—
for the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.Whoever says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness.
Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him to cause a fall.
But whoever hates his brother is in darkness; he walks in darkness and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

✝️ Gospel
Luke 2:22–35
(The Presentation of the Lord — Simeon’s Prophecy)
When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
It had been revealed to him by the Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law, he took Him into his arms and blessed God, saying:
“Now, Master, You may let Your servant go in peace,
according to Your word,
for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
which You prepared in the sight of all peoples:
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and glory for Your people Israel.”The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about Him.
And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother:
“Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted—
and you yourself a sword will pierce—
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”There was also a prophetess, Anna, advanced in years, who never left the temple but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. She gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.
✨ Reflection — “A Light That Reveals the Heart”
We are still in Christmas joy, Jim, but the Gospel today shows us something deeper than celebration:
Jesus is the Light not only to be admired, but to be followed.
1️⃣ Obedience opens revelation
Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple not because it was easy, but because it was faithful.
God often reveals Himself to those who obey first, even without full understanding.
2️⃣ Waiting is a spiritual posture
Simeon waited with expectation, not impatience.
And the Spirit led him at the exact moment to meet Jesus.
Your December prayers, devotionals, and ministry (like The Gospel For You) echo this same truth:
Those who wait in the Spirit will eventually hold the promise in their arms.
3️⃣ Jesus reveals the condition of our hearts
Simeon prophesied:
“He will be a sign that will be contradicted… so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
Jesus does not only comfort—
He exposes what is hidden.
Today’s 1st reading strengthens the message:
-
Claiming light but living in hate is blindness
-
Loving others proves we remain in the light
-
Walking like Jesus walked shows we truly know Him
Christmas gave us the Savior.
Now the Octave asks us:
Are we living like the One we received?
🙏 Prayer
Lord, thank You for coming as our Light.
Teach us to walk as Jesus walked—
in love, obedience, and compassion.
Reveal what must be healed in our hearts.
Let the darkness pass away from us.
Make us carriers of Your light to others.
Amen.
